About Us

What is Memories of Love?
Memories of Love is a non-profit foundation that provides, with the help of many caring community partners, the gift of a 5 night/6 day respite trip in Orlando, Florida to critically ill adults and their immediate families.

Who founded Memories of Love, and why?
Philanthropists Mel Gottlieb and Henri Landwirth co-founded Memories of Love in August of 2005 in loving memory of Mel’s son, Martin Gottlieb, who died at age 32, leaving a wife and two young children behind him.

Both Mel and Henri know the pain of losing precious loved ones to untimely death.  It is their hope that Memories of Love will provide the children of critically ill parents with lasting memories as they take a joyful family respite trip together.

Is Memories of Love only for terminally ill parents?
No.  The Memories of Love respite trip is provided to parents who are living with many life threatening medical conditions.  It is our hope that all of the participants survive their medical condition. Our focus is on helping them create joyful family memories for them and their children.

Our family was just approved for the wish respite trip.  How long will it take to be fulfilled?
We work quickly to verify the information on the application.  Your respite trip arrangements may be complete within 2 to 3 weeks of application, depending on accommodation availability.

Services

Who may be nominated for the Memories of Love wish respite trip?
You may nominate yourself if you meet the following criteria:

  • Have been medically diagnosed with a life threatening illness
  • Have children 16 years old or younger
  • Has never been a wish recipient

Is financial need a part of the nomination process?
No, financial need is not part of the decision making process.  You will not be asked any financial information.

What does the wish respite trip include?
Memories of Love provides a 5 night, 6 day respite in Orlando, which includes 3 day passes for the wish recipient and their children through age 16 to a 1 day pass to Sea World and a 2 day pass to Universal Studios. Also included are hotel accommodations, discount meal vouchers (based on availability) at select restaurants and $100 to help defray the cost of food, gas, parking, etc.

How long does the respite trip last?
The respite trip lasts for 5 nights and 6 days.

If the wish recipient can only go for part of the time, is that okay?
Yes.  A family may choose to go for part of the time.  It will not make them ineligible for the respite trip.

If we don’t use all of our meal vouchers, can we take them home, and use them there?
No.  The meal vouchers will expire on the last day of your respite trip.

Do you grant any other type of respite trips?
No, Memories of Love does not grant any other type of respite trip.

If we are not up to going to the theme parks, is there an alternative?
Yes, our gracious hotel partners for accommodations provide lovely accommodations, where you and your family are welcome to spend the day relaxing by the pool.

How many family members can go on the respite trip with me?
Your entire immediate family can go on the respite trip with you.  This includes children (for whom you have legal custody) through age 16.

What if I’m a single parent?  Can another adult come to help assist me with my children during the respite trip?
Yes.  The Memories of Love respite trip is set up for two adults and all of your children under sixteen.  If you are a single parent, you are entitled to invite another adult of your choice.

Can our grown children, grandchildren or some other relatives or friends accompany us on the trip?
If the recipient and spouse or significant other wants grown children, grandchildren, or any other relative or friend to accompany them on the trip, the family would be responsible for making arrangements and payment for the additional accommodations, meals, and theme park tickets.

What are my responsibilities in planning the trip?

  • You will be responsible for transportation to and during your Orlando stay.
  • You will be responsible for paying parking fees at theme parks. The $100 stipend will help defray this cost.
  • You will be responsible for medications and medical equipment needed.

Theme Parks


Will the theme park tickets be in our room upon check-in?
No.  In accordance with our agreement with the Theme Parks, and primarily, to assure that the tickets are used by the appropriate recipients, you and your family will be required to pick up the tickets at the parks in person and present a photo I.D.

Why can’t we eat our meals at the theme parks, instead of having to leave the park to go to the designated restaurants?
You will be provided with a $100.00 stipend.  You may choose to use the money for gas, meals at the theme parks, or for anything else.

Medical Help


If I need medical equipment, such as a wheelchair, will it be available?
No.  Medical equipment, such as a wheelchair, should be pre-arranged by you or your medical provider.

What happens if there is a medical emergency or we need medical help while on the respite trip?
In the event of a medical emergency, please dial 911.  Please be in contact with your medical provider/insurance carrier prior to the trip regarding medical emergencies.  There may be limitations on which hospitals or doctors may be used.

If I get too sick to take the trip, will my family be able to go without me?
No.  The purpose of the trip is for your children to spend time with you, and to create joyful family memories together.  You may choose to postpone your trip until you feel up to it.

How can my business help Memories of Love?
There are many ways your business can help Memories of Love. Donations are always welcome and any fund raising activity that you would like to have at your business would be great. For information on strategic and cause-related marketing campaigns, service and in-kind donations or how your company can help sponsor a wish or run a local campaign to benefit a specific family contact us.

Can I make a donation to Memories of Love on behalf of someone else?
There are many thoughtful ways to give a gift that keeps on giving.  To donate on someone’s behalf, contact us.  A donation receipt will be forwarded to you and notification will be sent to the recipient of the gift with your personal note.
